Founded in 1943, IKEA is a Swedish-founded multinational group that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances, and home accessories. It also happens to be the world’s largest furniture retailer.

Barghausen was contracted by IKEA North American Services for site development and redevelopment in Renton, WA. The extensive project included:

  • A phased demolition of the two existing IKEA buildings
  • A full redevelopment of the property with a new 399,179-square foot IKEA store, which houses a showroom, retail area, restaurant, public self-serve warehouse space, and associated non-public warehouse space
  • 1,528 parking stalls
  • Site improvements such as new pedestrian walkways, driveway modification and relocation, and landscaping—which included decorative plantings, street trees, a wet pond, and rain gardens

A project of this magnitude, of course, came with its own challenges. This high-profile project required extensive construction phasing, and also required us to maintain the operation of shared utilities with adjacent uses. In addition, the project demanded a storm drainage design that could accommodate multiple downstream systems.
